Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is Secure Global Desktop?

Oracle Secure Global Desktop (SGD) provides encrypted remote access to your computer(s) at LLE.

What's the difference bewtween VPN and SGD?

VPN opens up the entire network to the remote computer you use but is only compatible with Windows and Macintosh computers. SGD allows you to access your work system remotely through most web browsers.

What are the benefits?

SGD provides secure access for more platforms than VPN.

  • It provides better file protection since your home computer never has direct access to the files on your LLE computer.
  • It is much faster than VPN.
  • It allows remote access to X/Windows applications through any computer that SGD supports. Since you can access a PC or UNIX desktop, you can have secure access to the Laser Facility operations web pages.

I need network access for a license server. How will I get to it without VPN?

VPN access will continue to be available until another solution is available.

What do I need to do?
