SERVER AND STORAGE ENGINEER

POSITION SUMMARY:The Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) of the University of Rochester is a unique national resource for research and education in science and technology focusing on using lasers to initiate fusion and high energy density physics. LLE is currently seeking an experienced Server and Storage Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible, as a member of the LLE IT Server and Storage team, for designing, deploying and supporting servers and storage services for LLE research, operations, engineering and administration. They will report to the LLE IT Server and Storage Team Lead. Duties include day-to-day system engineering, monitoring overall system health, usage and capacity, performing system maintenance tasks, evaluating new hardware, and general troubleshooting for any issues that may arise. RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop, design and support LLE IT server and storage system infrastructure
  • Drive new architecture, designs, builds, tests and maintenance of LLE IT servers and storage capabilities
  • Evaluate the potential impacts of new servers and storage solutions in the environment
  • Measure and monitor overall system performance, usage, availability, capacity and health
  • Provide support for capacity monitoring and management
  • Interact with users to understand their computational and storage capacity needs
  • Design, implement and monitor IT servers and storage security compliance
  • Maintain knowledge of server and storage market trends and technology developments
  • Implement ITIL?-based IT Service Management processes and collaborate across IT functional groups

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B. S. in Information Technology, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent skills work experience. Advanced degree is a plus
  • Excellent technical, analytical & communication skills
  • 5+ years of hands on Linux experience and infrastructure support (networking, storage, backups, monitoring). Red Hat Linux and other certifications are a plus
  • Expertise Linux and Windows server operating systems, virtualization architecture, and multi-tier, resilient storage file systems, architecture and design
  • Experience designing and implementing data center server and networked storage solutions
  • Expertise in storage connection and data sharing with Linux and Windows workstations (SAMBA, SMB/CIFS)
  • Experience providing high-end technical support (installation, configuration, maintenance, upgrade, retirement, problem resolution, etc.)
  • DevOps experience is a plus
  • Proficiency in technical writing and documentation of solutions

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Strong IT skills in infrastructure and applications
  • Extensive Linux OS expertise. Red Hat Linux experience is preferred
  • Expertise is virtualization platform architecture, design and configuration (Linux KVM, Red Hat Virtualization (RHV), VMware)
  • Data center operations understanding of fundamentals in networking / cooling / power
  • Proficient using IT servers and storage system monitoring tools
  • Good understanding of computer, memory and storage architecture and their impact on performance
  • Knowledge and experience with applications/infrastructure in one or more of the major cloud environments (Azure, AWS, Google)
  • Experience in implementing change management and security controls for IT infrastructure
  • Experience using ITIL Service Management processes and ITSM tools. Certification is a plus

WEB DEVELOPMENT TEAM LEAD

POSITION SUMMARY:Lead the University of Rochester Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE) web development team in architecting, designing, developing and implementing web-based services and the LLE organization web presence. They will report to the Information Technology Manager. Additional duties include performing day-to-day web services and website management, monitoring overall web site and web services health, usage and capacity, performing system maintenance tasks, evaluating web services, and general troubleshooting for any issues that may arise.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the LLE IT web strategy planning, architecture and development functions and processes
  • Provide leadership for the development and management of LLE web data services
  • Manage internal and external web development resources to complete top priority LLE web projects
  • Ensure LLE web service compliance with IT security requirements
  • Measure and monitor web services performance, usage, availability, capacity and health
  • Mentor and coach web team to leverage new web technology trends and development methods
  • Encourage web developers to work with key stakeholders to ensure web service effectiveness
  • Foster a supportive work environment and maintain open, productive interactions across the organization
  • Support ITIL?-based IT Service Management process implementation
  • Ensure web services maintenance, installations and upgrades are timely, efficient and effective

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B. S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Data Science, Physics, Math or equivalent skills work experience. Advanced degree is a plus
  • Strong web architecture and front-end and back-end web development skills
  • 5+ years of hands on web application front-end and back-end services development experience.
  • 3+ years software development supervision and resource management experience
  • Demonstrated leadership and web development team coaching, advocating technical excellence, and working with the team to engage in problem solving and finding proactive solutions.
  • Excellent web and software development and user experience design technical and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in technical writing and documentation of solutions

PREFERRED SKILLS:

  • Demonstrated expertise in web programming languages, methodologies, and standards: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, PHP, JSON, XML, AJAX, NodeJS, SQL, etc.
  • Experience with real-time software development languages, Agile, Lean, SCRUM, Test Driven Development and Continuous Integration, distributed code revision control (GitLab, GitHub) and test automation
  • Strong user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) design for usability. User-centered design is a plus
  • Project management experience. PMI certification is a plus
  • Strong communication skills with an ability to communicate directly with peers, managers, staff, and vendors while leading development to a completed and successful solution
  • Strong organization skills to manage multiple timelines and complete tasks quickly within the constraints of stakeholders? timelines and budgets
  • Ability to interact positively and collaborate with individuals at all levels inside and outside the organization
  • Experience in implementing change management and IT security controls in a web development framework
  • Proficient using web services monitoring tools
  • Knowledge and experience with cloud web services development cloud environments (AWS, Azure, Google)

COMPUTATIONAL/THEORETICAL PLASMA PHYSICIST (RESEARCH ASSOCIATE)

The Theoretical Division seeks a computational/theoretical plasma physicist at the Research Associate level to conduct research in the areas of short and long pulse laser-plasma interactions. Experience running and programming simulations such as particle-in-cell (PIC) or Vlasov/Fokker-Planck would be an asset, as would experience in the interpretation or design of relevant experiments. In addition to an excellent understanding of laser-plasma physics, the successful candidate should have good interpersonal skills, a willingness to work in a team, and the ability to communicate well in writing. A Ph.D. in physics or a closely related area is required. Research associates are typically recent Ph.D. graduates that have demonstrated expertise by publishing their graduate research in peer-reviewed journals.
